Meaning & History

Derived from Latin rūma "udder". This name belonged to a goddess who protected breastfeeding mothers and possibly nursing infants. Her domain extended to protecting animal mothers, not just human ones. Rumina promoted suckling. This goddess received libations of milk, an uncommon liquid offering among the Romans.
