Meaning & History

Derived from Old Norse salr "hall, house" and maðr "person, man" (genitive manns). Alternatively this could be an Icelandic form of a German name in which the first element is derived from Old High German salo "dirty gray" (related to English sallow and Old Norse sölr "dirty yellow").

However, in the case of Salmann Tamimi (1955-2020), a Palestinian immigrant to Iceland who founded the Association of Muslims in Iceland, this was adopted as an Icelandic form of Suleiman, his original name.
