Sara or Sarah is a feminine given name found in many different areas of the world. It is a consistently popular given name across Europe and North America, and the Middle East—being commonly used as a female first name by Jews, Christians and Muslims alike, and remaining popular also among non-religious members of cultures influenced by these religions. In Arabic Sara translates to "joy" and "delight" In Hebrew Sara means "Princess". While frequently, the name refers to Sarah, the wife of Abraham in the Hebrew Bible, the Christian Old Testament, and the Islamic Quran. In Hebrew, and Persian, it means woman of high rank, often simply translated as "Princess". In Modern Hebrew, "sarah" (שרה) is the word for "woman minister".
Sarai or Sarah whatever, was an old old woman who had a baby in the Bible. That would be enough weirdness to scare me away from this name. Besides, it sounds low rent.
Sara (pronounced Sah-ra) is also a common Persian name that means "Purity" and "Guilelessness".
The Persian "Sara" has nothing to do with the Biblical Sarah. Indeed, it is not of Semitic origin at all. Persian is an Indo-European language. The word /Sara/ in Persian means 'pure, uncontaminated'. In Iran and other Persian/Iranian speaking countries (such as Afghanistan and Tajikistan) it is used as a feminine name.
This name isn't a variation of Sarah, but vice versa. Just like Rachel (Rey-chel) originated from the biblical equivalent and Dinah originated from Dina. Sara from the Torah was actually called saRAI at first, then became saRA or SAra.
Note that in Finnish, "Sara" means plants of genus Carex, so can be considered a nature-related name as well.
This name shouldn't be listed as a cognate when it is just a matter of spelling. [noted -ed]
Also means "Queen" in Scottish.
It's of Arabic/Middle Eastern origin too, and in Urdu (sah-rah) it means "everything". It's probably something different in Arabic! Either way I love this name! It's really pretty! And has MANY different great meanings!
