Comments (Meaning / History Only)

After doing some more research on this name, I believe the Dutch name may originally have been an adaptation of the German "Schüler", which derives from the word for school and means student.
The meaning of "scholar" makes no sense. The Dutch word for scholar is "geleerde". Schuyler seems like it's an old spelling of schuiler, which comes from the verb schuilen, which means "to take shelter". Therefore, Schuyler means "person who takes shelter".
Schuyler doesn't mean scholar in Dutch. The Dutch word for scholar is scholier or student.
The basic meaning of Schuyler is someone who seeks shelter (from bad weather).
