Comments for SHARIFA:
There's a 15th century Spanish ballad called "The Bridal of Andalla" about a Moorish woman called Xarifa (or, in some versions, Jarifa). I believe Xarifa is an Old Spanish-ised form of Sharifa, as "x" was pronounced like "sh" in Old Spanish. I prefer the medieval spelling Xarifa to the more phonetic Sharifa.-- Ailis 1/1/2010
