This is actually the legit female spelling for Sean. It seems to be unisex now. I do prefer the spelling Sean or Shaun for a male. All women I've met, including myself, are spelled this way. Hope it helps.
In the USA, this name can also be FEMININE, making it UNISEX -- as SEEN on the USA chart.

I have only known males using this spelling. The only female Shawn I have known spelled it Sian.
I also only know of boys with this name, the girls I know are Shaughnessy, Shawnnessy, Shaunessy and Shawnessy and one of the people I know with this name goes by the nickname Nessy.
Frankly, I've never seen a girl spell it SHAWN. The only girls I've met spell it the traditional way: Sean. The spelling of the name with the AW instead of EA has gotten very popular over the years, I've noticed. Or, in America, at least. [noted -ed]
Personally, as someone who is named "Shawn" and who is female and who does spell it "Shawn" I'm not sure where the pervious comment comes from. In fact, "Shawn" is normally spelled "Shawn" for females. Mostly every female I have come across whoose name was Shawn, spelled it "Shawn".
