Comments for SHEKER:
Sheker means "falsehood, lie" in both Yiddish and Hebrew.
Also, the English word "sugar" is a distant cousin of "Sheker". According to the dictionary, sugar comes from Arabic sukkar, from Persian shakar, from Sanskrit úarkarâ, meaning grit, ground sugar, which is basically the same as sandy sugar or sugar sand. In fact, pronounced "SHE-ker" with the last syllable sounding like "care", this name sounds vaguely like a foreigner, a French-speaker perhaps, trying to say "sugar". I think "SHE-ker" and "she-KER" are the prettiest pronunciations, but it might be pronounced differently in Kazakh, I don't know.-- Anonymous User 9/25/2009
