In Italy Stefania was overused in the third quarter of the 20th century. It was the 8th most popular name in Rome in 1951, the 5th in 1956 (behind Patrizia, Paola, Daniela and Anna), the 7th in 1961, the 4th in 1966 (behind Alessandra, Paola and Daniela) and the 7th in 1971. Nowadays it is not very popular.
Stefania Podgorska and her sister Helena were honored as Righteous Among the Nations for their heroics during the Holocaust. When she was only 16 (and her parents had just died), Stefania harbored 13 Jews in her home. Helena was 6. All of the Jews hidden in her house survived the war. She also provided food to Jews in the Przemysl ghetto.
