I am sick and tired of reading these comments that say that Sydney, the name I, a girl was given, is for boys only or is masculine. WAKE UP TO REALITY. It's not stupid for a girl to have the same name as a guy but with a different spelling. When I was younger, I used to hate it when someone spelled my name wrong. Now, I know why. People can't handle the fact that the majority of people prefer the name being a girl's. IT ISN'T WRONG, IT'S LOGIC. So can all the people who think the name is only for boys please stop for a moment to think about who they're offending. You can be any gender on here and still be sexist. So if you got something mean to say, KEEP IT TO YOURSELF.
Sydney has never been a male name to me, the differentiation being y: girl i: boy. So stop putting down people who use it for girls! It's one of the least masculine names I have heard. P.S. Girls with supposedly ' masculine ' names have a more likely chance of pursuing a STEM career.
Our son is called Sydney and he's number 5 in the family. All previous Sydney's in the family have been men, in fact the first Sydney in the family fought in the 1st World War and was decorated for bravery.
Sydney as a girl's name isn't a modern invention - it was a not entirely uncommon Victorian female name in England. I like it, and the French version Sidonie (as in the writer Colette).
While it seems very masculine to me, Sydney has a better claim as a female name than one might think---if I recall correctly, there is, surprisingly, a heroine of an 18th century novel by the name.
This name is commonly used in the Jewish religion famalies.
