Tabitha Babbitt 1779-1853 was an American inventor. She was a well known tool maker and invented the circular saw among other things. She must have been of a strong character to break through in a male dominated world.

When I was little, my parents took me to a Shaker cemetery. It wasn't one of those tourist trap places--we were the only ones there. In fact, we ended up in a location that wasn't on the map. Realistically, people probably knew about it, but I felt like I had found a hidden crypt. One of the graves there said "Tabitha Babbit" and I instantly fell in love with this name. Not only did I love the sound, I also pictured a kindly old witch living in a small cabin in the woods with jars of herbs on her shelf. Years later, I was doing a school project on the Shakers. Flipping nonchalantly through a book, I spotted the name Tabitha Babbit in the index. You have to understand, I knew this woman as a body in a grave; a fantasy image. It had never occurred to me that she had been a real person, let alone someone who was actually interesting to anybody but me. As it turns out, she was an inventor (the Shakers liked to make things), and one of her inventions was a circular saw. Not the very first circular saw, mind you, but a pretty good one.At first I was disappointed. She seemed so normal, not a magical being at all. But two seconds later, as I kept reading, I forgot my disappointment. I've since joined the two images in my mind--a combination of the mysterious witch and the intelligent, spirited woman. This name has always been and will continue to be an inspiration for me.
