Meaning & History

From the verb 正す/訂す (tadasu) meaning "to correct, rectify, reform, amend," cognate with the verbs 糺す/糾す (tadasu) meaning "to ascertain, confirm, verify" and 質す (tadasu) meaning "to inquire, question" (compare Tadashi which, in that case, is derived from a classical adjective). It can also be written as 匡 or 董.
Other kanji with connotations to these verbs include 格 meaning "method; rule, law," 貞 meaning "chastity," 理 meaning "reason, logic," 忠 meaning "loyalty, devotion, faithfulness," 規 meaning "standard," 政 meaning "rule, government," 督 meaning "command, supervise" and 義 meaning "morality, justice, honour."

One bearer of this name was career diplomat and cabinet minister Hayashi Tadasu (林 董) (1850-1913).
