Taffy is normally an abbreviation of Dafydd (my name) and is also used as a slur against Welsh people by the English. It comes from the river Taff that runs from Brecon to Cardiff and was used in the English song "Taffy was a Welsh man, Taffy was a thief".
Also a medieval English diminutive of David. http://www.tekeli.li/onomastikon/England-Medieval/Biblical.html.
Not so much a name as a general nickname for any Welsh person -- it can also come off as a little derogatory. Probably comes from the River Taff.
