Based on cemetery records, which aren't complete but give some indication of use, Thankful's popularity dropped a lot in America around the time of the Civil War, which is also when Thanksgiving became a national holiday...prior to that, it seems it was one of the most popular virtue names: less so than Charity, Mercy, Patience, Prudence but about on par with Temperance, Honor, Hope and much more common than Faith, Joy, Constance, Liberty, Loyal, Providence, Obedience, Deliverance, Amity, Verity, Clemency, Felicity, Harmony, Unity. There were thousands of people named it.
I saw several Thankful's/Thankfull's when browsing through early 18th century birth records in Boston. I highly doubt the Puritans were trying to be "unique" and "creative" as suggested by some of these ignorant comments. This website is not a modern baby name catalog.
