Variant of Old Norse Þjálfi, which is said to mean "He who keeps together; He who encompasses". The name is sometimes interpreted to mean "conquerer". It may also be derived from *þewa-alfaR meaning "servant-elf".

In Norse Mythology, Tjalve and his sister Röskva are servants of Thor.
