I had a dog named Toby, and a friend named Toby. Here is my analysis of each of them and what I think their name means to them.
The dog named Toby was funny, but was not interested in doing absolutely anything. She hated dog toys, but enjoyed walks and destroying things. All around, really a Toby at heart.
The friend named Toby is interesting. He too, enjoys destroying things, but is far less interested in walks. He likes musicals and weird accents, very different from my dog. Can't complain, still a Toby, if a different kind of Toby.

Toby is gorgeous. I view it as a masculine name, not unisex. It can be short for names such as Tobias, or used independently. Whilst any name can be used for any gender, technically, Toby is not unisex, in the way that Robin and Ashley are. People call girls James, Michael, Kevin, Stuart, Andrew, Steven, etc. I honestly can't say why, when they are male names, and there are enough beautiful female names out there. Calling a boy Annabel or Jessica would not make those names unisex. It would make the parents cruel.

My dog, who was a girl, was named Tobi. We thought ending the name in an "i" instead of a "y" made it feminine. I think the name suited her; she was a white and tan Lhasa Apso.

Toby (to me) is kind of a common name, I know a couple of boys named Toby. But I haven't met anyone with their name spelled Tobie, like mine. I personally hate the name since I'm a girl, I know it's unisex but it's a better boys name and I hate the name even more when someone says their cat or dogs name is Toby.

I've had this huge crush/obsession with Toby Keith for a long time, and I think of someone like him every time I think of this name: a fun-loving, down-to-earth, very funny, patriotic, and just in general a super nice guy. I know a lot of people who get a bad impression of this name, or name their child this after some alcolic or something in their family with this name, and don't like it. With people out there like Toby Keith bearing the name, I think it stands for something good and wholesome.
