Meaning & History

This name is used as 徳兵衛 with 徳 (toku) meaning "benevolence, commanding respect, goodness, virtue", 兵 (hyou, hei, tsuwamono, he) meaning "army, private, soldier, strategy, tactics, troops, warfare" and 衛 (e, ei) meaning "defence, protection."

One bearer of this name was early Edo period adventurer and writer Tokubei Tenjiku (or Tenjiku Tokubei if surname is used first) (天竺 徳兵衛) (1612-c.1692).
One fictional bearer of this name is Tokubei (徳兵衛), a merchant clerk and one of the central characters in the kabuki play, The Love Suicides at Sonezaki (曽根崎心中 - そねざきしんじゅう/Sonezaki Shinjū).

This name was most commonly used in the Edo period (1602-1868), albeit occasionally, but nowadays, it's very rarely given to boys, if given at all.
