Meaning & History

Means "tiger" in Japanese.

In WWII, it was used as a codeword to indicated that a complete surprise has been achieved, as an acronym for totsugeki raigeki (突撃雷撃) meaning "lightning attack". It was referenced in 'Tora! Tora! Tora!', the 1970 American-Japanese war film that dramatized the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor
