I always heard that "hild" in the name means shieldmaiden - valkyrie. That makes the name mean "Thor's shieldmaiden" - which make sense for a girl's name, I think. Hild was one of the main valkyries or shieldmaidens, so I guess it is very probable her name meant "battle". Many old norse female names still in use in Norway end with "hild", for instance Gunhild, Ragnhild, Åshild.
There are many ways of spelling this name in Norwegian - my own name, Torill, one of them. Other forms are Thorhild, Toril, Torild.
