Transferred use of the surname Tyrus, or modern blend of Tyrone and Cyrus. From the city of Tyre in Lebanon, from a word meaning "rock". This is the most common origin in the USA before the middle of the 20th century. Tyrus is the form of "Tyre" used in the King James Version of the Bible in several places in the prophetic books of the Old Testament. There were 97 men listed as Tyrus in the 1850 United States census. It may have been seen as appropriate for a boys' name because it rhymed with Cyrus. It was the given name of the famous baseball player Ty Cobb, who was born in the state of Georgia in 1886.
