Tsuda Umeko was a Japanese educator who pioneered in educating women in Japan. She began her education in the United States in 1871 and returned to Japan in 1882. She went back to the United States in 1888 to attend college there, and went back to Japan again in 1892. She founded Tsuda College in 1900 as well as the YWCA branch in Tokyo in 1905.
Umeko Ando was an Ainu singer and mukkuri player. In addition to recording several albums, often with Oki Kano, she is featured posthumously on the Samurai Champloo soundtrack with her song "Pekambe Uk". The seventeenth episode, which featured this song, was dedicated in her memory.
