Varpu is a woody plant with ground-hugging stems. It’s half meters high at most. Higher plant is a bush. Varpu could be translated as subshrub or dwarf shrub rather than berry bush.
Varpu isn't only a type of berry bush, it's the Finnish term for subshrub in general. In poetic style, varpu can also mean a sparrow which is varpunen in Finnish.
