Victoria Woodhull was the first woman to run for president in United States history.By any metric, Victoria Woodhull lived a colorful life. After a childhood marred by abuse, 14-year-old Victoria Claflin was abducted by a doctor named Canning Woodhull. The pair would marry in 1853 and would have children, though the marriage would end shortly thereafter. Victoria would be known by the Woodhull surname for the rest of her life. In 1865, she would marry a Union Civil War veteran, Col. James Blood.Victoria made a fortune as a traveling medium, eventually joining the Spiritualist movement of the period. As a medium, she impressed business magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt. With Vanderbilt’s support, Victoria and her sister, Tennessee Claflin, opened a Wall Street brokerage firm, called Woodhull, Claflin, & Company, in early 1870. Victoria and Tennessee became the first women stockbrokers on Wall Street, and were hailed by the New York Herald as the “Queens of Finance”.In April 1870, in a letter to the New York Herald, Victoria declared herself a candidate for the 1872 presidential election, the first woman to declare such. At the time, Victoria was just 31; she would not have been constitutionally eligible for the job until nearly a year after the 1872 elections. In May 1870, using the profits from their brokerage firm, Victoria and Tennessee started a newspaper, Wooodhull & Claflin's Weekly. The newspaper served as a mouthpiece for Victoria’s presidential ambitions, and also became a venue for women’s rights advocacy.Victoria became known for her promotion of what was known as “free love”. Her “free love” looked a great deal like a modern definition of consent, versus “free love” as it was known in the 1960s. Still, this was controversial. In January 1871, Victoria became the first woman to address a House Committee, the House Judiciary Committee, on the topic of women’s suffrage. Her argument was that women’s suffrage had already been guaranteed by the 14th and 15th amendments; Victoria was joined by major suffragettes like Susan B. Anthony, but was ultimately unsuccessful in convincing all but two Representatives to their side. Afterwards, Victoria became a highly visible figure in the suffrage movement. In 1872, Victoria was officially nominated for the presidency by the Equal Rights Party; her vice-presidential nominee was Frederick Douglass, though he never acknowledged such.Days before the election, Victoria published an issue of her newspaper devoted to an adulterous affair involving Henry Ward Beecher, a prominent New York cleric (and the brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe); Beecher had vilified Victoria for her promotion of free love. As a result, Victoria, her sister, and her husband were arrested for obscenity. Victoria Woodhull became the first woman presidential candidate, and she spent the night of the election in prison. Biographers vary in their account as to whether she received any popular votes, though most agree she received at least a few.Victoria and Tennessee would continue publishing their newspaper until 1876, when Victoria divorced Col. Blood. In 1877, Victoria moved to England. In England, she became a well-known public lecturer and started another magazine called “The Humanitarian”, which promoted eugenics. From abroad, Victoria sought the presidency in 1880 and 1892. She would marry a third time, and would die in England at 88 years in 1927.Victoria Woodhull was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2001.
