The first element of this name is derived from vandal, which is an extended form of vand, which in turn comes from Gothic vandjan (see Wandeburg). The Vandals, a Germanic tribe, might have derived their name from this element. The second element is derived from Gothic bairgan (bergan in Old High German) "to keep, to save, to preserve", or from Old High German burg "fortress."
