This name is often encountered as a variant form of Wigbald and Witbald. However, it can also be a name in its own right, in which case its first element is derived from either Old High German wîh meaning "holy, sacred" or from Old High German wîp meaning "woman". As with the aforementioned names, the second element of the name is derived from Old High German bald meaning "bold, brave".
