Francisco de Asís Javier Cugat Mingall de Bru y Deulofeu or known famously by his stage name, Xavier Cugat (1 January 1900 – 27 October 1990).
Xavier Cugat was a famous musician and bandleader who was born in Girona, Catalonia, Spain, but spent much of his early years in Havana, Cuba. His family moved to Cuba when he was three years old. Musically inclined, Xavier studied classical violin and worked as a violinist at the age of nine in a silent movie theater to help pay for his education.
On July 6th of 1915, his family went to New York city where young Xavier performed solo violin recitals alongside the famous opera singer, Enrico Caruso. During his young adulthood in the 1920s, Xavier performed at a nightclub called the Coconut Grove in Los Angeles. While performing at the nightclub, Cugat met many notable movie stars and celebrities of their age, the most pivotal amongst these noteworthies was none other than silent screen legend, Charlie Chaplin. The two became fast friends when Mr. Chaplin went to the nightclub to dance the tango. As a result of this, Xavier Cugat would have his band perform the tango much to the delight of Charlie and the attending audience. Witnessing the popularity of the music that was performed, Cugat managed to convince the owner of the Coconut Grove to hire dancers from South America to teach the clients how to dance the tango. In 1928, Xavier made the film called, Xavier Cugat and His Gigolos. Mr. Cugat also worked on caricatures as a side job for some publications such as the Los Angeles Times and others like the Photoplay magazine in 1927. At the Waldorf-Astoria in 1931, Xavier Cugat was a headliner performer along with his band where he took up residence for the next sixteen years while shuttling between New York city and Los Angeles. A curious trademark of Mr. Cugat was to hold a Chihuahua dog while he waved his baton with the other arm. Xavier's musical career permitted him to make quite a few appearances in movies throughout his tenure. These include as listed:
In Gay Madrid (1930)
You Were Never Lovelier (1942)
Week-End at the Waldorf (1945)
Bathing Beauty (1944)
Holiday in Mexico (1946)
A Date with Judy (1948)
On an Island with You (1948)
Chicago Syndicate (1955)Throughout his illustrious career, Xavier Cugat owned a Mexican restaurant in West Hollywood called Casa de Cugat that opened its doors in the 1940s and permanently closed in 1986.
He also had a subtle notoriety for being married five times. His final marriage, that ended in divorce in 1979, was to guitarist and comic Spanish-American actress, Charro. Cugat spent his last remaining years in his native homeland in Catalonia where he died at the age of 90 from heart failure. He was buried in his hometown of Girona and was posthumously inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame in 2001.
