Meaning & History

This name can be used as 米 (bei, mai, meitoru, kome, yone, me) meaning "metre, rice, USA" or it can be used as 与根 with 与 (yo, azuka.ru, ata.eru, kumi.suru, tomoni) meaning "award, bestow, cause, gift, give, godsend, impart, participate in, provide" and 根 (kon, ne, -ne) meaning "head (pimple), radical, root."
It can also be used to combine the phonetic character よ/ヨ (yo) with 子 (shi, su, tsu, ko) meaning "child, sign of the rat" or 祢 (dei, nai, ne) meaning "ancestral shrine."

It was uncommon in the first half of the Edo Period (1603-1868), but it became moderately popular in the latter part of the that period. It maintained its moderate popularity throughout most of the Meiji period (1868-1912), but it fell down in popularity by the 1910s.
