In Czech Republic we've got Zoe in our calendar. But it isn't very popular and the Czech pronunciation is "ZAW-eh".
"zo-EE" is pronounced in Modern Greek.
My sister is called Zoë, with the dieresis (2 dots) on the 'e'. Those 2 dots make it 'Zo-E' because otherwise the name Zoe would rhyme with Joe, making it just be pronounced 'Zo'. I know the most common spelling is Zoe that rhymes with Joey, but I prefer the 2 dots version. I think it looks nicer than Zoey, Zooey, Zowie or whatever other spellings there are.
I know a girl who pronounces her name ZO. Her name is always mispronounced by teachers and other students. She also has a sister named Phoebe whose name is pronounced FO-bee.
I, personally, prefer the pronunciation Zo. It makes more sense to me. If I want to have someone be called Zo-ee, I'll name them Zoey.
Why would it be pronounced Zo? That is the problem of the people saying it as Zoe has always been will always be pronounced Zo-ee. Zoey is a variant that is pronounced the EXACT SAME.
It is also an Italian name. The Italian pronunciation is DZOH-eh. [noted -ed]
This name can be pronounced zoh-EE or ZO.
I'd like to point out that it is not uninformed to pronounce this name as ZO and not ZO-E. My mother's name was Zoe. It was a family name going way back and it was always pronounced ZO in our family. My college roommate's name was Zoe and she also pronounced it this way. It is not a mispronunciation to do so. Either pronunciation is correct, although I realize that ZO-E is far more common.
