Meaning & History

Medieval Basque name derived from Basque zuri "white".

During the Middle Ages, this name was popular in all regions of the Basque Country. In the French parts, however, it was generally considered a direct translation of French Blanche. There are several records of Basque women named Maria Zuria who appear in French documents of the time as Marie Blanche.
A medieval variant of Zuria is Zurixe, while nowadays the form commonly used is Zuriñe.
