Meaning & History

Derived from the poetic Greek adjective ἀγήνωρ (agenor) which meant "very manly, heroic, valorous" as well as "headstrong, arrogant", from Greek ἄγαν (agan) meaning "very much" (in bad sense, "too much") and ἀνήρ (aner) meaning "man". In Greek mythology, Agenor was the king of the Phoenician city of Tyre and a son of Poseidon. He was the father of Europa and Cadmus. When Europa was abducted by Zeus, Agenor sent his sons in search of her.
