Meaning & History

The meaning and origin of the first element in this Germanic name is rather uncertain, and so there are various possibilities to the name's meaning. The most likely possibility is that the first element refers to the Huns, who derive their name from Germanic #hûn# "giant." Other possibilities are Old Norse #hûnn# "bear cub" and Celtic #kuno# "high." It's also possible that the first element is a blend of #hûn# with Gothic #kuni# "family, kin, race, kind" (see KUNIBERT). The second element in the name comes from Germanic #rîcja# "powerful, strong, mighty." The second element is also closely related to Celtic #rîg# or #rix# and Gothic #reiks#, which all mean "king, ruler." Huneric was a 5th-century king of the Vandals, a Germanic tribe.
