Meaning & History

The meaning and origin of the first element of this Germanic name is very uncertain - at least five possible meanings exist. We know that it comes from #hag#, but we don't know where #hag# itself comes from. It may come from Old High German #hac# "city, town, hedge" or from #haga# "to put together" or from Old High German #hagan# "to please" or "enclosure." Other possibilities are: Old Norse #hagr# "utility, advantage, profit, gain" - or the adjective #hagr#, which means "right" (as in 'your right arm, the door on the right,' etc.) or "useful." The second element of this name is derived from Old High German #beraht# "bright."
