Meaning & History

Old Prussian god of the earth.

His name is said to be derived from Old Prussian peuse (compare Lithuanian pušis), meaning "pine tree".

His servants were the so-called Barstucke or Barstukken, the "little people", akin to the English "wights". Puschkayts would send these servants to sick and ailing people, and if the Barstukken took a liking to them, they would attend to them and nurse them back to health.
