Meaning & History

Lusitanian name believed to be the name of a goddess, which appears in a single inscription: the Cabeço das Fraguas inscription from present-day Portugal. It is likely derived from Celtic *trebo- meaning "house, dwelling place" and an uncertain second element, potentially the Lepontic and Ligurian word pala probably meaning "sacred stone", or the second element might mean "flat land" or "protector". In the inscription, Trebopala is recorded as receiving a single sheep (oilam).
