Meaning & History

This name was borne by two notable Georgian kings, who are both known as MIRIAN in English. The earliest of the two was king Mirvan I of Iberia, who reigned from 159 BC to 109 BC. He was a member of the ancient Iranian nobility and became king through his marriage to the daughter of his predecessor Saurmag, who had had no sons of his own.

His name was derived from the Middle Persian name Mihrban (also found written as Mehrban, Meherban and Meherwan), which in turn came from Middle Persian mihrbān meaning "friendly, kind". Also compare Middle Persian mihr or mehr, which can mean "MITHRA" as well as "love, friendship" and "contract, bond". The name is related to the Old Iranian name Mithrapana meaning "having the protection of MITHRA".
