Meaning & History

From a combination of the characters 神 (shen, meaning “god” or “divine”) and 农 (nong, meaning “farmer”). This was the name of a culture hero in Chinese mythology who taught agriculture and herbology to humanity. He famously tasted hundreds of plants to discern their medicinal properties and was said to have been poisoned in the process. He is sometimes considered to be the same person as the Flame Emperor and is commonly regarded as one of the Three Sovereigns alongside NÜWA and FUXI.
