Yuck. Why couldn't they go for Olivia instead? Olives are FOOD!

"Olivia" is a made up name from literature. You might think of olive fruit when you see the name Olive, but I don't!Olive isn't just a FOOD. It's a TREE. Like Rowan, Ash, Cinnamon, Ebony, Holly, Linden, Juniper, Willow, and Sequoia. Only the symbolic meaning of Olive should be much more obvious and accessible than any of those (some of them probably have almost no symbolism at all), because of the very common idiom about offering someone an olive branch. It symbolizes peace and abundance since ancient times. Olives were likely cultivated since the beginning of human civilization. There's a ~2000 year old olive tree in Greece. How the heck is Olive a "food" name. I don't get that. It's way less fluffy and silly than Olivia. Olivia is like Hollietta or Willowina.

Jeez, take it easy!I know the story of the name Olive and I know that it's a tree, too. I just don't care for it.
No need to be so angry!
I don't understand what I have done wrong?
First of all, English is not my first language. Actually, Olive used to remind me of Minette Walter's "Sculptress" in which Olive is a woman accused of a bestialic murder, and that's why I didn't like it originally.
But then I read so many comments by English-speakers who wrote "Olives are food, olives are food, yak, yak". So now, food is what I associate the name with. I thought it was the right thing to write to English-speakers...I didn't mean any harm...
And I know what olives trees look like, I have seen them in Greece. I'm not stupid, but I feel very stupid when you react like this and give me a lesson.I feel very sad and upset right now.

WhoaI think you took that response a little too personally.Anywho I love the name Olive and actually, the color is the first thing that comes to mind for me... it's a very earthy tone and I love that

gosh, sorryI only used caps because you did. I thought it was sort of funny. I'm so sorry that I seemed to be attacking you. I don't take these kinds of opinion differences very seriously, so I felt like my "ranting" tone would seem silly.

If you had been the only one who associated Olive with olives to eat, I probably would not have even replied. You just seemed to say it most strongly, so I responded to you with my objection.I don't think my opinion is bigger than yours. If you (and almost everyone else, haha) associate it with food, there's not a whole lot I can do about it. It just disappoints me that people don't think of the tree, because if you do, the name is so much nicer. And to me, the tree thing is really a strong association so it's hard for me to imagine how people can think of the fruit but not the tree. I'm not attached to the name and wouldn't use it, I just am trying to get people to see it more positively.

Olive the Other Reindeer...I didn't comment earlier but I really like Olive. It reminds me of olives and I love olives. I actually don't automatically think of the peace meaning or of the tree, which is weird. I probably don't automatically think of the tree since olive trees don't grow here. I probably don't usually think of the term olive branch for the same reason. Doves remind be of olive branches.Maybe I will try to get my brain to associate Olive with the tree and with peace, because I like those associations. Oh Olive also reminds me of Olive the Other Reindeer children's book which was later made into a movie where Drew Barrymore voiced the dog Olive. Maybe that's what originally put Olive on her radar and why she loves the name so much that she used it.

OK.
Well, you see, in Swedish, "oliv" simply means "olive" like the fruit (?) you eat. Olive like the tree is "olivträd" (olive tree, simply). So I haven't really thought about it being the name of a tree, too. Actually, I haven't thought of it as food either. I mostly wrote it because I thought it was...well, the thing you "should" think of the name.
Also, I associate Olivia with a cute little girl who liked me a lot. I'm usually so awkward when I meet little children, so I felt so happy when this little girl liked me and wanted to hug! That's why Olivia sounds better than Olive to me.But Olive isn't that bad. At least it's a proper name, far better than atrocities like Audio Science...

*smallvoice*I like Audio Science.

I like Audio. Not crazy about Science but the sound isn't bad. Don't care for Audio Science as a combo sinse it sounds like a college course, but actually it would be very fitting for use by someone like my SO, an audiologist :)

Actually...Olive used to be the more popular of the two. I think the obsession with Olive now is in relation to vintage names.

My family tree contains an Olivia Sandford Lastname, born in about 1905 and always known as Olive, it seems, or else Ollie. I'm glad her parents gave her a name with an option.

That's nice! I like it. I ran across a little girl named Olive, in Texas, who'd be about 7 or 8 now, and that pretty much sealed my thought that it is very usable, even though it's not a personal favorite. Olive is tidier and more modest than Olivia, and not self-consciously herby like Hazel because the olive is symbolic in a way people recognize. Well, they should recognize.

I don't care for Olive but it's nice to see a celeb who doesn't make a publicity stunt out of naming a child.

I wouldn't personally use the name Olive, but I don't mind it. Happy with their choice it's a nice one, not that they would care what I think!!

I don't really care for the name Olive myself, but as far as celebrity names go, it could have been much worse. Olive has grown on me some.

Olive is adorable, and I love that they passed down Barrymore as her middle name. I like it a lot.

I think Olive is really cute. I'm happy to see it being used. eta Barry and berry sound nothing alike in my accent, which is where I think some people are getting olives + berries from?

Ugh, I hate the image of olives and berries back-to-back. Could be worse, I suppose, when I think of all those horrible celeb baby names ...

Congrats to them. I really dislike Olive though. :(

While I'm not really a "fan" of the name Olive, especially not as a first name (it reminds me too much of the fruit), there are many, *many* worse things to be called, especially as a "celebrity baby." I'd say that Olive Barrymore Kopelman actually has a nice name.Congrats to Drew & Will!

I like it, even if Olive Kopelman sounds dorky. It's cute.

I just see olives in a dish. I don't like that name and I'd be so envious of girls called Olivia if I was an Olive

Is Barrymore her middle name (more)?Just wondering. I think it's kind of cool to use a maiden name as a middle name. I also really like Olive even though it's a bit celeb trendy. I don't like double surnames at all, especially if they're hyphenated. I mean I understand why some people want to use them but they almost always ruin a good first/last name combo for me. Of course there are a few exceptions. Anyway, Olive is lovely.

YesFrom what I gather using family names is traditional for Drew's family (both her first and middle names are family last names and the same for her siblings and other family members).

My thought on that was that she's the only Barrymore still in acting, so she wanted to pass the name on. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrymore_family

More olive berries, please.Seriously, I knew some celebrity was going to think Olive made a cute name for their daughter. One already has and I just knew another one was going to. Yuck yuck yuck.
