Thoughts on these names
Boaz, Abel, Jairus, Japheth, Sonny and Billy (would be full name). Thoughts, opinions, thanks. DH is soooooo picky this time around, even more so than usual! It's proving difficult to agree on names so far, but we will get there!Sarah -

Boaz has been an old fav of mine. It was my top name for years with Boaz Marino Constantine, the combo that I would have used. I really like Abel. I've been loving it more and more lately. Jairus doesn't go at al in a sibset with Jethro and Jasper, too similar.Japheth doesn't do anything for me. It looks like a more complicated of Joseph. Sonny would be a good nickname if you'd keep up the Js with the boys, for Jason. Jason "Sonny" would fit. I don't really like Sonny on its own. Billy would be a giant anti-climax after Jasper, Jethro and Eden...
Some suggestions, if you're open to them:Joachim (I really like this one with your other children)
Joash
Darius
Theron
Levi
Avery
Remy
Remiel
Ronen
Cainan
Bodhi
Isaiah
Micaiah
Rory
Jeffrey
Ramsey
Zephyr

Thanks for the feedback. We love Remiel, but only as a mn. We are considering Remi as a fn though, like as a short version of Remiel. I just mentioned Levi to DH last night and he liked it. I think it's a bit too popular though here in Australia.Isaiah, Joash and Micaiah are all nice too.

Abel is my favorite of those, but I'm not really liking any of them. I have a cousin named Sonny, but I've always thought that it's ugly, nicknamey and quite WT to be honest. Billy is better - but it has the same feeling.Boaz, Jairus and Japheth are a bit much for me and extremely religious. I know that it probably doesn't bother you, but I would never do it.

Thanks for the feedback. We are obviously into the Biblical names!

Boaz — I like it and know someone named this. It’s nice, but to me it would seem a bit out of place on someone who isn’t Jewish. Abel — love it! It’s underused and meaningful.Jairus — not a fan. Something about the obvious Latinizing of a Hebrew name just doesn’t work. Jair would be better imho. Sonny — no, no, no. Only as a family nickname. It seems childish to me. Billy — very childish as a full name. Fine as a nickname for William.

I really like Abel. There was a baby Abel born at the hospital when I had Patience and I remember thinking how lovely and unusual it was I also quite like Sonny but would only have it as a nickname Not a fan of the others sorry

I'm just going to say that although you didn't ask, I'm on team Ezra for this baby ;) Also, I don't think I said congratulations to you earlier but a big congratulations to you all on another healthy little boy on the way!Boaz - I find this name to be ugly and awkward to say but that's an entirely subjective opinion
Abel - I love Abel. I think it sounds friendly and warm and it will age well.
Jairus - it isn't a favorite of mine but I think it would fit well with your other kids and it would be a more offbeat name like Jethro
Japheth - I find this difficult to say and kind of lisp and I think you'd have some pronunciation problems with it from the general Australian population. Also, try calling Jethro and Japheth right after one another- it's a tongue twister!
Sonny - I actually adore Sonny even though I'm sure many people on this board will think it's silly. I know adults with the name and it sounds good on them and it always seems friendly and fun to me. I'm not sure it 'fits' with your other kid's names and the lack of good meaning (which I know is important to you) would be a mismatch too.
Billy - My main issue with this is that it doesn't seem to fit with your kids' names. It sticks out like a sore thumb. But I don't mind it as a full name, it works unlike some other nicknames as full names. Some other suggestions:
Ezra (#TeamEzra haha)
Elon
Esdras
Elisha
Elijah
Ezekiel
Enoch
Erastus
Esaias
Ezechias

Haha, thanks for the feedback. DH is unfortunately not keen on Ezra so far, unless he changes his mind. I think it's a great name too.

I like Boaz and Abel, because they are simple and nice. My favourite is Abel. I think it matches with Jasper and Jethro.Jairus and especially Japheth are not that easy to pronounce and write. And I would prevent to use a J name again, except you want to continue this later on with all boys.I prefer Sonny and Billy as nicknames.

Out of those I think Abel would fit best with your family. It's Biblical, it's easy to say and spell, you'd have two kids with 6 letters and two kids with 4, and Abe is a friendly nn. The others:
I wouldn't choose another J name in your shoes & Japheth is hard to say and doesn't appeal to me at all. Jairus is interesting, but you're going to get jair-us all the time.
Boaz: snakes! And by gum it's ugly, and I find Bo super annoying and flimsy. Sorry.
Sonny and Billy don't fit the theme. They do fit current trends, and I don't think they're going to sound that childish in amongst all the other nicknamey kids that will be their classmates, but they seem odd choices with three carefully considered Biblical siblings.

Boaz is all kinds of fantastic and I’m not even going to look at the others.
Good meaning, good story, sounds great with your others without being all matchy -matchy, spunky sound, good nickname - whats not to love?!Boaz Micah
Boaz Malachi
Boaz Tobias
Boaz Levi
Boaz Josiah
Boaz Asher
Boaz DeaconI think Boaz Asher is my fave, both for sound and because I just can’t go past the meaning of Asher.

Thanks, I think Boaz is great too, but sadly DH is not as keen :( I love the Biblical story of Boaz and Ruth and you're right, the meaning of the name is great too. Asher is also nice, though I've seen it used on girls a bit here in Australia and that puts me off using it.

I'd prefer Jairus to Japheth if you want another J name. Otherwise, Abel rather than Boaz, which sounds like the bark of a large dog. Sonny could be a nn for any boy name under the, er, sun, so there doesn't seem much point in making it the full name. Anyway, it doesn't sit well on an adult. Same with Billy, though William or even Billson would be fine. I always prefer a fn that provides options: any William can be Billy with ease, but no Billy can ever be William without lots of paperwork.Keep us posted, please - this is getting fascinating!

Haha, thanks! At this point I'm throwing all sorts of names at DH to try and find something he likes! He just keeps suggesting "boring" names or ones I don't really want to use for one reason or another. We do both like Moses (but don't think it fits with our other kids names, as it's a lot heavier), Rufus (though I don't think I can see us with a DS named Rufus), Felix and Silas. We both like Remi as a short form of Remiel, but worry people will assume Remi is a girls name. We will get there, we always do! :)

I love Moses and would use it in a heartbeat of it didn't clash with our surname. Gavin don't see it as a heavy name myself. In regards to Remi. Around here Demi is the girls spelling and Remy is the boys. I really really like Remiel

Boaz- I like it, I like the way it looks.
Abel- I love it. It sounds classic but not outdated. My one issue is kids would call him a bell to tease him.
Jairus- I like, it sounds nice. I don’t think people will pronounce it wrong.
Japheth- It’s nice but people will pronounce it wrong.
Sonny- I don’t like it. I always think of angry old men shouting at little boys on the street who are just having fun.
Billy- Not as a full name. I don’t even really like it as a nickname for William. Billy could work as a nickname whilst he’s young but it’s a very childish name. It also makes me think of goats.

Boaz, Abel, Jairus and Japheth - I think these names go well with your other children's names. Sonny and Billy are cute, but they seem nicknamey and insubstantial in comparison. I also randomly start thinking of the NZ sports player Sonny Bill Williams. Jarius - I'm unfamiliar with this name and unsure how to pronounce it.Japheth - If I've worked out how to pronounce this correctly, "Jay" would be a cute nickname. Abel - I think this one is my favourite, because I like the way it sounds. It is the one that is most familiar to me out of these four.Boaz - I think "Bo" is a sweet nickname and the meaning interests me.

Thanks for the feedback. Jairus is jy-rus. Japheth is jay-feth.

Boaz - It's ok. I like the nn Bo. It reminds me of a deep, bellowing sound that an instrument like a didgeridoo makes.Abel - I like this name. It makes me think of music, probably because of the singer The Weeknd.Jairus - I love the meaning. This could fit nicely, I think.Japheth - The meaning is a bit strange, but the name is ok. I'm pretty neutral on it. No strong feelings either way.Sonny - I can't say I'm a fan of Sonny. I slightly prefer Sunny, but otherwise, it seems like something patronizing you say to a young man.Billy - Billy is ok. I do prefer it as a nickname.

I like for normally informal nick-names to serve as full names - if I understood your intent correctly. This way, he can use William or some other form if he likes as a nick-nick name but for formalities.

If I was forced at gunpoint to choose, I'd choose Billy. It's not that great as a full name, but it's bearable.
Dismiss Sonny. Immediately. It's a stupid stupid name and people who use it on its own are too stupid even to name the kid after his father. Sonny's a name for an old person to call a younger man by when they don't know his name and don't think they owe him the courtesy of Sir or even Young Man. As in "Just a minute there, Sonny, where do you think you're going with MY mobility scooter?!"

Abel is able: might get some well-meaning but lame jokes "Hey, don't dis Abel". I like Abe and *el names. It's pleasant, though not particularly striking to me. The fact that he was murdered in a famous symbolic story would bug me enough I wouldn't personally use it.Jairus (if it's Jay-rus?) is kind of cool. About like Jaiden / Jared combined with Ferris / Cyrus. I like the sounds, and it's got a positive meaning.Japheth is obscure enough that I'd wonder what the appeal of it was — like, did the parents want Joseph "Jay", but that was too common? Is it a childhood nickname for James V "Jayfifth"? Do they really like Jehoshaphat, but that's too weird, so they saw Japheth and decided, "Oh that's perfect!" — I'm not really sure what to think. It's okay.Boaz has always reminded me of Bozo the clown, plus Beau / Bo (which strikes me as dumb, because I see it as having an idealized/romanticized American Southern Gothic connotation). I don't love Boaz's story in the bible either. It's an interesting sound, though, and the meaning's not bad.Sonny strikes me as being mellow and rural in a mostly positive way.Billy the Kid. Billy goats. It sounds juvenile and annoying to me. I don't even like Bill / Billy as a NN. He might have a brother called Bucky or Chuck or Beau.

Haha, thanks for the feedback! Jairus is jy-rus. Japheth was one of Noah's sons in the Bible, I like the sound of it. I have the same issue with Abel, the whole being murdered thing! I do still like the name though.I'm the opposite about Boaz, I love the Biblical story of Boaz and Ruth.Sonny seems friendly to me. Billy is ok, but I don't think I'd ever use it. It was a name DH suggested last night, as a reference to Billy Graham. I like it for that reason, but seems a bit "normal" next to our other kids more unusual names.

Boaz - my pick of the list. Bo is a cute nn. Just found out it autocorrects to hoax!
Abel - ok. Has very old man vibes to me and reminds me of the word able, not necessarily a bad thing I suppose
Jairus- no idea how to pronounce this. Quite strange
Japheth - too strange also, sounds awkward
Sonny - least favourite on the list, the most unimaginative thing a boy could be named in my opinion (apart from boy)
Billy - ok, but too nicknamey

Jairus is jy-rus. Thanks for the feedback.

Another thought with Jairus because I was pronouncing it in my head as jay-rus...jy-rus reminds me of gyrate or gyrating, which isn't the best association.

Abel is my favorte; Boaz is okay too. Sonny and Billy seem ridiculous as full names but for nicknames they’d be fine. I don’t care for Jairus or Japheth.

Boaz - I just have never warmed to this one. It's odd sounding to my earsAbel - love it. I think it's really lovely, I have a friend Abel who is a cool jazz muso :)Jairus - is it jy-rus? Not a fanJapheth - really cool. I like this one.Sonny - I will never understand the appeal or popularity of this one!
vote up1
Yes Jairus is jy-rus. DH isn't keen either! Nor is he keen on Boaz :( Not too sure about his thoughts on Abel. Japheth he was so so on and I don't think he likes Sonny! He just keeps suggesting "boring" names like Michael, Joshua, Max, stuff like that which are so ridiculously common and popular! Nice names, just too common for me. He's not into Ezra, Amos or Jed at the moment either, which is a shame. He does like Moses, but agrees it doesn't really fit with our other kids names, as it's more "heavy". He also doesn't mind Rufus, but I'm not entirely sure I can see us with a DS named Rufus. He doesn't mind Asher, but doesn't love it.His suggestions were Seth (no), Felix (?), Reuben (love it but no for a few reasons), Jonah, Jesse and Silas. It's always tricky!
