Rare name sighting
I met someone named Cletus today; he was 30 something. It's not a name I'm particularly drawn to, but it was fun to hear. What do you think of Cletus?

Now I don't generally know what people mean by "it sounds like a hillbilly name" (being British an all that) but all I can see with this name is the hillbilly from The Simpsons.I'm not wild on it myself, but it's easy to say and I like it more than /some/ names I've seen recently. I think it might be that Cletus at least sounds like a nice person, if a bit dim-witted. I feel like I'd be invited in for roasted possum and lye soup.I think I'd be happy to meet a Cletus

It's awful, but interesting to see in real life. I've only ever heard it in media to portray backwards hillbilly types.

It is terrible. Aside from sounding like a body part, it's a Central Casting hillbilly name; that's why the Slack-Jawed Yokel on the Simpsons is named Cletus.Believe it or not, a few years ago a man here in Delaware was on the run after killing his stepfather in a fight. He was armed and dangerous and people in the area actually got robocalls from the police department warning about him. His name was Cletus. He was a black guy, which was even odder than the name itself; it's stereotypically a "white-trash, redneck" name.

Some folk’ll never lose a toe
But, then again, some folk’ll.
It’s Cletus the slackjawed yokel!

It makes me think of Cletus Spuckler (aka "Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel") on The Simpsons, and also a song by an indie country band (Golden Delicious) called "Cletus, For The Last Time, Get The Hell Out Of Your Sister's Dress For The Very Last Time." I don't think I've ever met a Cletus IRL.

It reminds me of some redneck homophobic dude. It also is very nasally pronunciation-wise
