Presentation of an emetic name + game challenge :)
*Kariofyllia* is a girl's name that has become quite trendy in Greece during the past decade. The name's increasing popularity -- sparked an actress bearing this name -- is quite annoying, in a Brittny-Brianna sort of way. The name was constructed from "kariofili," which in Greek means musket/flintlock. "Kariofili" itself was coined after *Carlo e figli* (Carlos and son), a brand of muskets used during the 1821 Greek war of independence. Needless to so, few of the people naming their daughters Kariofyllia" are aware of this etymology. Now, here's a little challenge for fun's sake:
Can you think of any brand or product names that have been established as human names in any language? I don’t mean names like "Mercedes" or "Tiffany" that preceded the actual brand.

Yep. 12 girls and 7 boys born in the U.S. last year and named "Dior".

When the first "Starbuck" appears, I'll know humanity is doomed.

We're safe for awhile -- unless there were less than 5 Starbucks born last year. My stats only go down to 5 occurences for a name.-- Nanaea

Do you really have the complete list of names given to babies in 2000? OMG, I'd so love to have this! I only have the Top 1000, and you'd make me one of the happiest persons in the world if you could tell me where you can get that list, or if you could mail it to me!
Thanks a lot,
Sandra

Super Duper listI have compiled a "super-duper" list of all names listed in various sites in the Net, including high caliber sites such as BtN and onscure cyber-underbelly sites such as the Kabalarians. It covers several thousands of names, and Nan and I have based the creation of our anagam mane list (http://www.behindthename.com/anagram.html)a couple of months ago. Lemme know if this is what you need :)

Sorry, Sandra. You've got to work in a library for info like that. The list doesn't exist on the 'net and is not capable of being e-mailed.-- Nanaea

Sandra & Pavlos, try this...Apparently, Parenthood.com once put up the complete SSA population sampling list for 1997 on their website, but the SSA probably asked them to take it down. You can still access the list, however, via Google's cache. Here are the URL's for the complete list of boys' and girls' names taken from the SSA population sampling for 1997 (the number in parentheses indicates the number of children given that particular name in the SSA population sampling):Girls

"Sweater Girls", fine wine, expensive champagne...Last year, there were 22 girls born in the U.S. and named "Cashmere" (in 1999 there were less than 15).In 2000, there were 34 girls born in the the U.S. and named "Chardonnay" (46 in 1999).In 2000, there were 543 girls born in the U.S. and named "Cristal" (518 in 1999).Yes, technically "Cristal" may have been an actual name first (most likely in France) but, before the champagne came to American national conciousness, more Yanks were naming their daughters simply "Crystal" instead.-- Nanaea

I just rememebered another one: when in the States, my neighbors -- a cheesy nouveau-riche family -- named their daughter Dresden in a pathetic attempt to ascend the food chain.

Chanel and Lexus both appear in recent top 1000 lists for the USA. I'd bet their newfound popularity has been influenced by the perfume and the car.
