I hate the name Adaline. People with this name are so mean!

It's very plantation era cool. Adaline's dad is very rich and her suitors have lots of prospects. She writes in her diary every night and letters to her brother, Nathaniel, everyday. (He's fighting in the Civil War).

It sounds so graceful and pretty. Like a mix between Adelaide and Madeline.

The Underhill Society of America shows that this name has been in use since at least the 1810s, with this exact spelling. Ada was a popular name in the 1800s at #46 in the 1880s, and Ida at #7, so Adaline is the natural spelling, though Ada is also a nickname for the spelling Adeline. Adaline is considered American in origin. Ada means happy and noble in Europe, is used in the Bible and means "adornment."

The popularity spike for this variant may have been caused in part by the romantic drama film The Age of Adaline (2015), about a woman who stops aging after a car accident.
