Latinized form of Greek Ἀλκίνους (Alkinous), derived from αλκη (alke) "defense, defensive strength, valor" and νους (nous) "mind". In Greek mythology this was the name of the king of the Phaeacians, who was also the father of Nausicaa. He welcomed Odysseus to his island (Odyssey VI, VII, VIII), and also the Argonauts on their return voyage.
