St. Antiochus is the patron saint of Sardinia. According to the tradition Antiochus was born in Mauretania* at the end of I century AD, he was both physician and scientist. Antiochus became Christian and contributed to the conversion of many people to Christianity.
The "Passio" is the story of Antiochus handed down by the monks of Saint Victor of Marseilles. This story tells of the torture inflicted to Antiochus in Africa by the Romans, up to the "damnatio ad metalla", namely, the conviction to hard-labor in the mines. The conviction led Antiochus to the current island of Santu Antiogu/Sant'Antioco, named after him, where he founded the first Sardinian Christian community. Antiochus was martyred in 127 AD, on the island that now bears his name.*Mauretania (not to be confused with the current state of Mauritania) was the name of a region in North Africa, which was a kingdom and then a Roman province, divided between Mauretania Tingitana and Mauretania Cesariense.
