In some cases it may be a transferred use of the surname Cadwallader.
A famous bearer was Cadwallader Colden (1688-1776), born in Ireland to Scottish parents, and raised and educated in Scotland. He moved to America, where he became a physician, natural scientist, and lieutenant-governor for the Province of New York.
