Meaning & History
Derived from Arabic جيحون (jayhun) referring to Gihon (or Gichon), the second of four mythological rivers that were said to flow out of the Garden of Eden. The name itself is derived from Hebrew גיחון (gichon) which can mean "bursting forth, gushing". This is also the Turkish name for the Amu Darya, a river in Central Asia.
