Flaminius

Derived from Latin flamen a specific kind of Ancient Roman priest.

Gaius Flaminius Nepos was a consul (chief magistrate) of the Roman Republic in the 3rd century BC. He had a road built, the Via Flaminia, that stretched from Rome to the Adriatic Sea on the east coast of Italy. During the Second Punic War in 217 BC (Hannibal's invasion of Italy), Flaminius tracked Hannibal's movements and led an army to meet him. They were ambushed, and Flaminius was killed in battle.
