Meaning & History

Variant spelling of Gaetulius, a name that has two possible etymological origins. One is that it means "inhabitant of Gaeta", which is an Italian city that ultimately derives its name from Greek kaiétas meaning "cave". The other is that it derives from Gaetulia, a region in North Africa that the Romans had named after the Gaetuli, a Berber tribe that inhabited that area. A bearer of this name was Saint Getulius, a 2nd-century saint and the husband of Saint Symphorosa.
