Meaning & History

Means "Horus is in jubilation".

He was the last Pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty (c.1306/1319 BCE - c.1292 BCE), though he was not related to a royal family and is believed to have been of common birth. Before he became pharaoh he was the commander in chief of the army under the reigns of Tutankhamun and Ay, and it was under his reign that official action against the preceding Amarna rulers began, including demolishing the monuments of Akhenaten and usurping the monuments of Tutankhamun and Ay. He had no children and instead appointed his vizier Paramesse as his successor, who would go on to become Ramses I.
