There are five generations of Nina, pronounced Nine-a, in my family.
I’m the third, my grandaughter is the fifth. I was born in 1946, my grandmother in 1882, in a family that for many generations had lived in north Mississippi. My family was originally English and Scottish.

I love LOTS of names that end in INA, or LINA or have similar sounds, this one is less frilly but girly... With all the Noras and Novas (I like but know SO MANY), Nina will fit in but also stand out. It does not require a nickname, which is nice bc sometimes the nickname can be a deal breaker on many names.

I have no appreciation for this name at all. I find it bland, boring, and very plain, and having to grow up being named "Nina" was a hardship. I distinctly remember disliking it for most of my life, as I always wanted a longer, prettier name. Although my parents seem to think that it's elegant and pretty, I think that it is very simple and plain. I have to go with my full name now, Nina Alexandra (first and middle), since Nina on its own is so unlike me. I was always jealous of people with longer names; even longer spellings of a short name. And the sound of "Nina" just sounds ugly to me.

My name is Nina (nine-ah) I do not dislike the pronunciation of "Nine-ah" or "Neen-ah" If there is anything that is difficult about it it is if someone is pronouncing it differently than my given name. If it is someone I will see repeatedly I usually gently say it is Nina like China. If it is someone that I may just see in that short period of time I usually do not say anything. I do not want people to be embarrassed for pronouncing it differently than it was meant to be because I did not kindly correct them. I think my mom chose it from a Russian movie Star magazine however we are not Russian but a Scandinavian mixture living in the Northwest region of the United States. I grew up with nicknames like niner, forty niner, number 9. I like that it is a little different.

In defense of 'Nina' and 'niña' NOT being the same word, 'Nina' ('NEE-nah' as I pronounce it) is very uncommon as an official name in Spanish-speaking countries. If someone is called 'Nina' it's more common for it to be a nickname for that person, and a short version of something else. From personal experience, when introducing myself in Spanish-speaking countries I am frequently asked "What is that short for?"

It constantly grates my nerves when people insist that NIE-nah is incorrect. It is not incorrect in Older English dialect and in some parts of the United States, NIE-nah is the correct pronunciation. Both Nee-nah and NIE-nah are correct depending on where you live in the world. It is rather ignorant to say that NIE-nah is not correct. I know a girl named Nina (NIE-nah) from the South and the name has been in her family with that pronunciation for generation. I think this is a beautiful, feminine name. I'm a Kindergarten teacher, and I had a student with this name last year. It is not a name I've seen in my school, so if someone is looking for a unique but very pretty name, this certainly is one. It was pronounced NEE-na.

Niña has an Ñ in it (and Ñ isn't just an N with a funny mark over it; it's a totally separate letter in the Spanish alphabet), Nina doesn't. They're pronounced differently too. Niña means little girl; Nina is just a name.
