Possibly derived from Greek φίνις (phinis), an obscure word of which the meaning is uncertain. It may perhaps mean "vulture". Otherwise, the name may be a compound name that consists of the Greek elements ἶφι (iphi) "strong, powerful" (see Iphigeneia) and νοῦς (nous) "mind". In Greek mythology, Phineus was a king of Thrace.
