Meaning & History

Possibly means "to bring help", derived from Greek φορεω (phoreo) "to bring, to carry, to bear" combined with Greek ὀνή (onē) meaning "help". Another possibility is that the name is derived from Greek φόρον (phoron) meaning "forum, market", or even from Greek φόρος (phoros) meaning "tribute, tax". In Greek mythology, Phoroneus was one of the sons of the river god Inachus.
